From the start, TomTom focused on making technology accessible for everyone, beginning with software development for business-to-business mobile applications and personal digital assistants (PDAs) for consumers. In just two years TomTom became the market leader in PDA software with navigation applications such as EnRoute (later renamed RoutePlanner) and Citymaps.
2001 marked TomTom’s 10-year anniversary and a new focus on in-car navigation products for PDAs. By June 2002 the TomTom Navigator was launched, providing customers across Europe with an easy-to-use, affordable navigation solution for the first time.
A year after the successful launch of TomTom Navigator, it was clear there was strong demand for an all-in-one, easy-to-use, portable navigation device. TomTom recruited an experienced hardware team ready to take on this challenge. The result was not just a new product, but also an entirely new category in consumer electronics: the Portable Navigation Device (PND).
The launch of the first TomTom GO in March 2004 revolutionised the way millions of drivers got from point A to point B. The first ever PND was affordable and accessible to everyone and became the fastest selling consumer technology device ever, reaching one million sales faster than the introduction of the mobile phone. Demand grew rapidly across Europe and North America, since then, over 75 million devices have been sold in 35 countries, guiding drivers over 280 billion kilometres.
In the years to follow, TomTom continued to innovate and create new products. A number of new businesses including Data factory AG, Applied Generics, and one of the largest digital map making companies in the world, Tele Atlas, were acquired. These provided specialist data, knowledge, and resources to deliver a best-in-class navigation experience for customers.
Along with the development of new PNDs, TomTom developed in-dash systems for the automotive industry. It also diversified into fleet management and vehicle telematics, TomTom Telematics is now recognised as a leading provider of telematics solutions with over 350,000 subscriptions worldwide.
In 2013 TomTom launched its own branded GPS Sport Watches to help runners, cyclists and swimmers keep moving towards their fitness goals, by providing essential performance information at-a-glance.
TomTom has grown from a Dutch based start-up company into a multi-national, global brand. The original founders remain committed to the business and together with the 4,000 employees are focused on the helping people achieve their goals.
